Native Grassesnative grasses

WildLands uses native grasses for cost-effective erosion control, particularly on slopes.  Because they are adapted to local environmental conditions, native grasses are more likely to persist and spread.  Once established, they require little maintenance, such as irrigation and fertilizer.

In the past, fast-growing, exotic species were used to control erosion of roadsides and fire recovery sites.  However, these species have proven to be problematic because 1) they out-compete slower-growing, longer-lived native species, and 2) they create dense stands of limited species that provide little coverage and forage for wildlife.  Once established, exotic species are difficult to eradicate and thus cost more, in the long term, for weed control and revegetation.

For native grasses, Wildlands relies on a trusted network of seed producers that provide high-quality, weed-free native seed.  For many projects, we specify locally-sourced seed which provides the most site-specific and well-adapted genetic strains for the projects.
